The towels on the Gumby’s heads are actually knotted hankies. It’s something weird Brits used to do going back probably a hundred years ago when they visited the seaside and lounged around all day long in a deckchair. The idea was to protect your head from sunburn… especially if you happened to be bald. I suppose this would have been long before sun cream was in common use… or even existed.
