Thanks for the video, that was fun. 🙂

Ahah, yup another missed opportunity indeed. This said there was not much to expect from ICE since they were responsible for the marvel that is OutRun Amiga. The game is signed Probe which was contracted by US Gold but they actually subcontracted ICE to do it.

There is an interesting interview on CodeTapper’s website from Douglas Little, which worked for them where he explains that the “road routines” of ICE used the blitter which given their speed seems really hard to believe (or their coders just were plain bad), it is there: http://codetapper.com/amiga/interviews/doug-little/ . The really weird part is where he explains that ICE road routines were the sacred cow of the company and built its reputation which publishers, which is quite mind-blowing to read given how badly they compare to that of Lotus as you rightfully indicate in the video.

Lotus II (the first full screen Lotus) came in 1991, that is one year before Turbo OutRun so alas using its engine would have implied waiting one more year. As for the original OutRun, it reached the Amiga in 1988 so we would have had to wait three more years to see it ported using the “Lotus Engine”.

This said, I guess we can all agree this would have been worth it given the sad joke that we were served. 😉
