The less said about Altered Beast the better. I have lots of great memories of two-player Golden Axe sessions though. Squabbling over who gets the pick-up spoils and hacking each other to pieces accidentally (or not) certainly adds another dimension you won’t get from the single player experience. Going back to it now on my own it does feel like a bit of a primitive button-masher sadly. I suppose it doesn’t help that the series of manoeuvres you pull off with the single button arrangement are all automatic, and so defeating the enemies feels like less of an achievement.
